oh god no

Oh God No started two years ago in an Open Mic on a Monday night. When Mike and Zac both showed up after a couple weeks of not going specifically looking for one another. They’d heard each other play over a couple months at the open Mic hosted by Bill Ludlow of Dirty Goat Productions and wanted to try a jam session out with one another. Later that week, Mike showed up at Zac’s apartment to check it out. That day they went through a few covers and nothing was really sticking out until Mike started wingin’ it on a couple chords. It caught Zac’s ear. Zac ran into his bedroom where he had a stack of poetry and grabbed one sheet out, came back into the room and had Mike play the made up riff again. a couple hours later they had written their first song together titled “Perfect Dream” the song was about Zac’s Girlfriend at the time, Jennifer Kucharski. (There is talk of bringing the song back into the setlist).
Shortly after, Mike and Zac got together a couple more times, where “Immortals” was born. Mike knew a drummer from the same open mic, Miles Tippet. Mike Approached Miles with Zac one night and gave him the rundown of the two songs, they jammed them out live that night, and the band had their first drummer.
There was still a piece missing, a Bass Player. The band auditioned a couple guys, but they lacked the feel and experience that was being sought out. Among these auditions was Cristian Walker, a friend of Mike’s from work, at the time he was still fairly new to the instrument and didn’t seem quite ready. After some debate, Miles suggested that Zac pick up the bass and that they rocked as a power trio. And thus the first lineup was complete.
Some time went by and they still couldn’t pick a name, until one night Dirty Goat Productions introduces the band as “Next up, we got, Zac, Mike, and Miles” he turned away from the microphone and muttered, “Oh God, No.” Just at their sheer volume level. It was discussed at the next practice, and became the band’s name.
Mike and Zac originally met up in late December of 08, the band was approached the first time they played the Big Fish Pub open mic in march, and they booked their first show April 3rd, 2009.
Promoter, Sound Engineer, and lead singer of Miles to Nowhere, Kristen Taylor took a liking to the band and began booking them a lot at Big Fish Pub. Unfortunately by the end of the summer Mike had become burned out and felt he couldn’t put that kind of time into playing with the band, having a full time job as a manager at a sporting goods store.
Zac picked up the guitar, he and Miles played as a two piece for a few months until one night at a show at the Yucca Tap Room they were approached by friend, Bethany CARRELL about the seemingly open spot for a bass player. Skeptical, they had her come down for the next practice. She was accepted into the band and played her first official show with Oh God No at The Hangart in Tuscon, AZ. August 28th 2009.
In November of 2009, Zac was feeling like the band was losing its direction and was not what it should be, it was lacking the high energy they had in the beginning. Reluctant, he asked Mike if he wanted to come back and be a part of it once again. Due to previous quarrels within the band he was reluctant to say yes, but Zac convinced him. Mike Rejoined the band in December of 09.
Shortly after, recruiting Bethany CARRELL turned out to be a drastic mistake. Bethany and Zac began a relationship and ended up Married. Miles quit for personal reasons; and though, Mike, Zac and Bethany held on, it seemed it was over.
Zac and Bethany CARRELL parted ways on terrible ends shortly after early March of 2010. Mike and Zac approached each other yet again about kick starting the band back into the scene to be the staple they knew it could be. They Brought on Cristian Walker to play the bass, And a drummer by the name of Carissa G. Henderson. Mike and Zac both knew her from the days of the old Dirty Goat open mic down at Smokey’s in Mesa. “She’s a blues drummer, but lets try her out.” They thought.
A couple weeks later the four of them got together for a practice session. Everything clicked, felt natural and a burst of energy came forth. Oh God No was back in action!
Zac immediately booked two shows a month for the whole summer at venues in town. They played, Big Fish Pub, Hollywood Alley, Club Red, Joe’s Grotto, and this little hole in the wall called Kirk’s Sports Grill.
In September, Carissa decided she was going to go to LA for school. Leaving Zac, Mike and Cristian devastated. Mike quit yet again, this time on personal standings with Zac.
Zac had met a drummer looking for a band about a year back and kept brief contact with him as an acquaintance and growing friend. His Name, Jonathan Siesel.
Zac and Cristian met with Johnny, and Johnny well exceeded expectations. A perfectly skilled and dynamic drummer. Oh God No wasn’t done yet! During the fall of 2010 they brought Johnny up to speed and spent a lot of time practicing doing no shows. Until early December, Kristen Taylor asked if they wanted a spot on an upcoming show at Big Fish Pub. December 3rd, Oh God No took the stage. Mike showed up at the show and played their last song, “Letting Go” with the band, deciding to come back.
Now at the end of February 2011 the band continues to look forward, this time in a much more positive and professional mindset. Its been a long hard road, I don’t think a train could stop them at this point.
