Hurricane Katrina Aug 29th, 2005
So my story started out on Friday, 3 days before the storm. I had just recently moved into a condo on the beach. I think I was there 4 months to the day.
Anyway so I started to get ready for work and watching the news. I worked for an airport shuttle service that ran between New Orleans and Biloxi as a driver. So my job consisted of driving into New Orleans sitting at the airport for 2 hours and driving back. So on the news they were saying that they had activated a Contra-evacuation of New Orleans.(that means all 6 lanes north bound and south bound were heading north) So that means I really couldn’t do my job. So I called into work and mentioned the evacuation and said there isn’t a point in me coming to work.
So from there I had called my dad who also lived in Biloxi to see what he was going to do. I went over to my dad’s to see what the plan of action was. He asked me what I was doing there, that everything would be fine, so I just went home. Then on Saturday I filled my gas tank went over to my dads with a trunk full of clothes. We hung out drinking and singing karaoke.
Sunday when we woke up, we hung out watched some t.v. Then we started watching the news and the weather channel. The t.v. warned us that we should evacuate. So we didnt listen. I know it was really dumb. I have been called an idiot so many times over that decision. But when it comes down to it my father, being unknowingly stubborn, wouldnt leave. He thought the same thing everyone else thought. When you cry wolf so many times, like the weather service has, people stop listening.
When we woke up Monday morning the power went out at like 7ish. We started to panic. We started to see the water rising outside very slowly. Then there was a loud crash in the back of the house. I looked out the window from the living room and saw that a tree had fallen from the neighbors yard onto the house.
My dad’s girlfriend was watching out the front windows watching the water rise. She screamed at one point as she watched a huge branch fall from a tree bouncing off my dads truck crushing the roof of my car.
The water started to rise faster and further. There was a point where we were sitting watching the water come up over 4 feet outside while the floor stayed dry inside. Then the windows started to snap from the pressure. The interior walls were starting to bow inward. At this point I decided we really, really needed to do something.
So I tried to go out to the garage to get upstairs into the attic. the pressure was so great on the door that I couldn’t move it. So the water was right at 3 feet inside by the time I was able to find something blunt enough to knock a whole in the ceiling.
My dad was working on a kinda boat scheme in the living room so there was an ore. That i just happened to grab as it was floating by. I knocked a whole in the ceiling that was big enough to get my hand in and started pulling down the drywall until there was a hole big enough to get up in the attic. So I hopped into the attic and started kicking the drywall until the hole was pretty good size. I climbed down and helped my dads girlfriend in the attic. Then climbed back up to pull my dad up. As soon as my dad was up the south wall of the house caved in and the water level got up to about 7 and a half feet. As we watched the water rise inside I occasionally looked outside through the attic vents. I saw my car pick up and float away. There were three boats I saw float by.
We sat talking about what we were going to do when it was over.
The wind and rain were so noisy.
We didn’t plan it out at all. We had no food, no water, the cell phone we did have died shortly after we got in the attic. 8 hours of just sitting in the attic watching the house I grew up in get destroyed beneath me. After it was over we climbed down to see that the three houses across the street were gone. There was debris everywhere. So that’s pretty much it for the storm. We managed to get to a hurricane shelter and get some food. We stayed there 3 days until my brother was able to come get us. We dropped my dad and his girlfriend off at her sister’s house. We then headed to Baton Rouge to my brother’s apartment. Hung out there a couple days and then got on a plane to Phoenix.
So now here I am….
